Question #1:

how to paint composite wood?

I own black-finish furniture. I've been searching for a storage cabinet under $70 with a similar dark finish but have been unable to do so - and a storage cabinet that would completely fit my needs has shown up at Wal-Mart, on sale for 40% off.
However, it is a light oak finish.

How can I paint this composite wood to give it a faux black wood finish? I want the faux grain appearance and I know I won't get it if I just bought black paint and painted it with a normal paintbrush.
Here is the product -

I'm not sure this would be strong enough to handle sanding....

Question #2:

What colors should I paint my small office? What color of curtains and accent colors?

i have a black chair with beige and black pillows, beige carpeting and medium oak colored trim. I wish I had an inspirational picture to grab colors from but i didn't find one yet so I'm going off the black and beige furniture but i need color. Thanks ahead of time for your help.

Question #3:

How can I bring together my new living space with a dark burgundy leather sofa & love seat?

I currently have olive green/moss walls, two glass end tables, a cocktail table and an oak fireplace and wall to wall cream carpet in my living room. My window treatments are simple white wood blinds. I treated myself to new furniture but the room, which is a nice size, now looks a little too dark-I think I need to lighten it up. Any suggestions how can I bring this room together?

Question #4:

Has anyone used denatured alcohol to to refinish oak? Is there anything similar to use on polyurethane?

My hardwood floors are a mess. The finish is anyway. I've refinished oak furniture with denatured alcohol and it's easy. I'd just take some fine steel wool and dump some denatured alcohol on the piece and lightly scrub and it would liquefy the varnish finish and I'd just get a rag and wipe it off and walla, you'd be down to the wood, the old dirty finish would be wiped off. Now I can put a new finish on it. I'd like to do something that easy to my oak floors that have polyurethane on them. Is there anything I can use? I don't want to sand them.

Question #5:

What color should I paint my room?

My comforter has giant flowers on it, in shades of purples and pinks.
My furniture is cherry wood and my floors are oak, so they're light.
The trim around my windows and my doors are also oak.

Most of the things in my room have purple or red incorporated somehow into the patterns or textures.

I hate matchy-matchy arrangements. I was thinking a cranberry color, but
I'm afraid that it will clash with my floor, windows, and doors.
What do you think?

ANYWAYS, what color should I paint my room?

Question #6:

How much would you ask/charge for these (furniture)?

I'm moving across country and need to sell my furniture but not sure what's a good price..
--2 bar stools (metal & suede w backs) They are really pretty cost me $70 each last year.
--Cloth Sofa- average size, all the cushions, good condition. Paid $150 for it at Ikea basement last year
--Queen bed frame- oak, platform style, sits on floor w/ headboard, footboard, and side rails. Paid $200
--Dresser- oak wood matches bed frame, 5 drawer. Paid $100
-- Queen pillow top mattress, do people ever want a used mattress? Paid $500 for it 2 years ago
--Kitchen stuff like blender, microwave, George Foreman counter grill, plates

I'm going to put flyers around my apartment complex instead of doing Craigslist. Thanks!

Question #7:

Cant make my mind up! Help? New wardrobe...?

Hey :)
I'm 18 and female and re-doing my room. We have a pretty low budget.
I'm a bit OCD when it comes to things matching! I also like white/neutral things.

I originally wanted a big white wardrobe... Or a mirrored one.
However, due to our low budget If i went for a white wardrobe that's all I could literally afford.

So I would have a bed and a wardrobe in my room!

OR, I could buy a cheap pine/oak wardrobe from Ikea and because it's so cheap.. I could also buy the matching chest of drawers and bed side cabinet.

I know this may not seem like a big deal to some, but it really is to me. My unorganised and mis-matched bedroom drives me insane.
So, which should I get?
I'm worried that If i go for the pine colour one I would start to dislike it and want a new white one? But I'm not sure.

Argos have a cheap white bedroom furniture set (It's like £130 for a 3 door wardrobe, chest of drawers and bed side cabinet!!) But my parents are really reluctant to buy furniture from Argos!! Anyone had any experience??

Question #11:

How to determine the type of wood on an old dresser?

I have 2 dressers from United Furniture Corporation that are at least 50 years old. My dad had them when he was a kid and he is 47. The problem is that i am refinishing them to a darker color but one of the pieces is just beaten up over the years so I was going to replace it but i dont know what type of wood it is. Im assuming oak but i honestly have no idea. The wood has a very rough grain and a pale gold color. Any other ways to determin what i may have?

Question #12:

My new oak furniture?

Is there any way of telling if my oak furniture is lacquered or oiled? It is not glossy and does have a slightly greasy feel to it. There are pencil marks on the wood where the hinges are. If it is lacquered will I be able to sand it and oil it?
Thanks
Sharon

Question #13:

what color of curtains?

I am painting my walls Grey, with an accent color of almost like a marigold yellow color. I don't know what color curtains to choose, although I was thinking white or ivory. Our wood floors are called antique oak, and we have brown leather furniture, although I am considering changing it as I am not a fan of leather anymore.

Question #14:

Color help for a temporary situation... The carpet is BLUE?

We recently bought an older doublewide with the intention of remodeling it. However, it will be a while before we get into the real meat of the remodel and actually get ready for new carpet. The doublewide is a 1995 model - so when I say the carpet is blue - it's that "country" blue from back in the 90s. Maybe a bit darker than the whole light/medium blue that came with the whole "country duck theme". But the moulding in the entire place is LIGHT wood grain.... it's gotta go. We can't get rid of the carpet yet - but we certainly can paint all this moulding - most of my furniture is a medium oak - what colors would you suggest for the moulding, door frames, walls, window treatments, etc - considering we have to coordinate around the blue carpet.... AND PLEASE keep in mind, I do NOT like the whole maroon, green, blue theme. Most of my knick-knack decor is more of an tuscan style with iron, metals, pottery (raw and creams) and wood.

HELP!
Sorry. My upholstery is a rusty brown. Below is a link Click Here

This is our living room furniture. The color is called Tanner (but that doesn't really help does it) LOL. Anyway, we won't be changing it: just purchased this set 9 mos ago. It works perfect with all the other decor - and it's not bad against the blue carpet either.... just don't want to end up with a 90's decor scheme just because I have 90s blue carpet.
LOL the fact that it's NOT real wood is all the more reason to paint it. I know what the construction is - it's compressed cardboard - but leaving it as-is IS NOT an option. I've already painted one area that has this type material on it, and it's holding up fine. We're looking at a year before we start the mass remodel - until then I have to do something to make this place more "today" instead of yesterday. Paint and inexpensive drapery is definitely doable as a temp solution. Living with it the way it is for a year is not doable.

Question #15:

What color works best with oak furniture?

I got new furniture, and my walls don't really go with it, so I was wondering what colors coordinate the best with oak furniture?

Question #16:

Wall decor for mission style apartment?

I am looking for a piece of wall art to go on the wall behind my couch. Preferable in a 24x24 size. My living room has black leather furniture, mission style medium oak tables, and a large medium oak trunk/coffee table. I have accents of black throughout the room. Wall sconces and clock are of brushed bronze and dark amber glass. I would like a stretched canvas or painting type artwork over the couch. I could really use suggestions for colors and links to actual examples of artwork to go with my decor. Thanks for all your help!
Xiomy- that is so funny! That is actually one of the pieces I was contemplating! So nice to have my choice confirmed. Thanks!

Question #18:

Do you think that this could get published? Chapt. 1?

The following is a novel that I am beggining to write, and I REALLY want to know if it's Publish-worthy, so to speak. I have split this question into three different ones: one for each chapter that I've written. This book is called Mr. Linden's Library. Please Enjoy.
I am 13.

CHAPTER ONE

On Elmdale Street, no. 2, Megan was watching the misty morning take over on one of the last days of September. School had already started, and she still had a mound of homework to finish. She turned to her room, which was as easy to get through, at the moment, as a toxic waste dump. Her room was small, with a bed that took up most of the floor other than a dresser, a nightstand, and a computer desk that was buried in paper. Clothes and books were strewn across the floor so that many books were almost ripped, and a few clothes were hung upon furniture. There was only one thing that was orderly in this room, and it was under her bed. She held a collection of books and parchment that were organized by color, title and even shape. Megan loved classics as much as her books that contained stories of adventure, mystery, comedy, and fantasy. She could never stop reading. Her friends were annoyed at her for reading so much, but she didn't care. Her eyes took one last glance at the window, and then she headed downstairs for dinner.
"Megan! Where are you? Oh there you are! You're always locked up in that room that I hardly ever see you anymore!" said her mother.
Her mother, a tall woman with a pointed face and thin eyes watched her make her way over to the table. She usually wore a long skirt and a blouse with an apron that most people would've thought she had found in a dumpster. Her dark hair was in a tight bun that was pulled almost to the bottom of her neck. She continued to wash the dishes after a long stare at Megan when she did not respond. Megan's father was gone for the day on important business matters.
"Megan, I forgot to tell you, but there's this book I forgot to return to the library. I was wondering if you could do me a favor and return it for me?" asked her mother.
Megan's head shot up at once. She loved the library. If she could, she would spend all day reading every book she could lay hands on. The Worthington's Library was the biggest in the county. The owner, Mr. Worthington, knew Megan very well from the frequent visits she made. It was a very classy place, with it's oak doors and its old furniture. There were all kinds of rooms for almost every kind of book and people would see Megan walking from room to room in search for a story.
"Sure," said Megan, "but please don't make me take Sam, please!"
Sam was Megan's younger brother. He was annoying and preposterous and loved to get Megan in trouble. Whenever her mother made her take Sam to the library he would scream and knock things over so it would be Megan's fault. She usually got kicked out because of him.
"Now Megan, you know he loves to go with you. How can I say no?" she said laughing.
Megan groaned and put her head on the table. When her mother called for Sam, she got up and picked up the book that her mother had gotten. When she looked for a library sticker (that all books had from the Worthington's Library), she asked, "Did you get this from Worthington's?"
"What? Oh, no. I found this other library down that same street, though. It was a strange place. . ." her voice trailed off as she scribbled something down on a sticky note. "Here," she added, "this is the address. Just tell the owner it’s from me."
Megan took the piece of paper and examined it. She had never heard of the place before. Since she went to do the errands quite often, she though she knew all the addresses here.
Oh well, she thought, just as Sam came bounding down the stairs.
"What?" he asked.
"You're going to the library with Megan," she said, "because she needs to return a book for me."
A wide grin spread across Sam's face when he looked at Megan's agitated one.
"Let's go then!" he said still smiling.
Sulking, Megan took the lead out the door and Sam followed. It seemed like a longer walk than usual, but it was probably because Sam kept singing Mary Had a Little Lamb at the top of his voice to make people stare at them. Finally, however, they reached the address that her mother had scribbled on the paper.
This can't be right, she thought, surely this can't be right. All there was at the address was an alleyway that turned left so that she couldn't see what was at the end. She thought about going through it for a moment, but kept changing her mind long enough for Sam to burst out, "What are we waiting here for?" At first she just stood there and then said, "This is it, I think...".
The alleyway was a bit frightening. It was shaded so it became dark at the turn, and trash cans infested with rats were scattered her
